Testimonials

Home Front K9s Board member Enrique’s Herrera and his wife Susan, also a USAF retiree, have been fighting for her life for over 20 years against a debilitating disease called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS.  This disease consumes its victim’s mental and physical being, it robs them of their freedom, and ruins their quality of life. Susan fights this disease every day and she is so incredibly grateful for the mental stability, physical support, and unconditional love that our Home Front K9 Hero gives her. During Enrique’s transition out of the military, he was fortunate to attend the National Intrepid Center of Excellence program at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, MD. The incredible staff at NICoE confirmed that his 24-year Special Operations career, filled with a series of micro-concussive and mild-TBI events, and the standard Special Operations wear and tear on his body truly did have an effect on him. While not physically or overtly noticeable, the invisible wounds of war were absolutely apparent to his teammates, close friends, and family. Today with HFK9 Hero’s help, Enrique has learned to foresee situations, recognize symptoms, and apply the appropriate counter measures to mitigate physiological responses. HFK9 Hero also helps to literally carry the load being the third point of contact, supporting Susan and Enrique as they maneuver through challenging terrain or transit up or down simple staircases. This family is grateful to HFK9 for the opportunity to maintain their dignity, independence, and quality of life. They look forward to serving their fellow veterans by being Home Front K9 advocates, making the necessary connections and continue to change and save lives.
